UPDATED: Derry woman seriously injured when struck crossing Tsienneto Road
DERRY — A pedestrian sustained critical injuries after being struck by a car while crossing Tsienneto Road Saturday, Derry police said.
Jeanne Petrin, 69, was first taken to Parkland Medical Center and then flown to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston because of the severity of her injuries, according to police. She remained in critical condition Sunday night, a hospital spokeswoman said.
The accident occurred at about 5:30 p.m. when Petrin was crossing Tsienneto Road northbound in the area of Sunview Condominiums toward the parking lot of a business, Fireye Inc. While crossing the road, Petrin was struck by a car traveling westbound toward the intersection of Tsienneto Road and Route 28, police said.
Lt. Dan Beattie said Saturday night that it was dark and the collision occurred in a poorly lit area.
“The pedestrian had just stepped off and unfortunately the collision was unavoidable,” Beattie said.
Following the accident, police blocked off a stretch of Tsienneto at the accident scene and called in an accident reconstruction team. Motorists were directed around the scene as a Derry detective could be seen taking photos of an unoccupied late model car, still in the road where the collision occurred.
Al Negron, who lives in Sunview Condominium, said he was walking his dog Saturday night at around 7:30 p.m. when he heard some commotion on Tsienneto Road. He saw the accident reconstruction team and noticed the late model car that was unoccupied and still in the westbound lane.
“I was walking the dog and I decided to go down there to see exactly what was going on,” Negron said.
He spoke to a man at the scene who told him a woman had been hit by the car.
“I didn’t see any damage to the vehicle,” Negron said, adding that the car looked like a late model Honda Civic sedan.
Negron said he didn’t know of any other accidents on the road but that motorists tend to drive fast.
Another Sunview resident, Matthew Pace said he didn’t see the accident but came across the accident reconstruction scene on Saturday night at about 7 p.m.
“They were cleaning it up,” Pace said.
Pace said the stretch of road has a small hill that can pose somewhat of a hazard for motorists.
The accident remains under investigation and police are not releasing information on the driver.
