Alderman recount ends with same two winners in Nashua

NASHUA — Volunteers gathered at Nashua City Hall on Monday to hand count more than 1,350 ballots from two tight alderman races.

The results netted the same winners, with David Schoneman securing the Ward 3 alderman seat and state Rep. Pamela Brown securing the Ward 4 alderman seat.

Schoneman kept his election victory, taking the win with 503 votes compared to Paul Shea’s 496 votes. Schoneman gained two votes and Shea gained one in the recount.

The opponents shook hands and hugged after the new results were announced.

“This was a bit nerve-wracking,” admitted Schoneman after the recount.

Now that his win is official, Schoneman said he is looking forward to connecting with the Ward 3 residents, implementing change and doing his best to restore faith and transparency in city government.

Shea said he was prepared for the same results but admitted it was still disappointing.

“I owed it to my supporters to request a recount. Nobody played foul politics in this race, and that makes me very proud,” said Shea, who maintained his political career is not over. “I am open to whatever the future brings, and I will keep working to improve the city.”

Despite the change in votes, Shea ultimately withdrew the recount request, meaning the original votes of 501-495 will be recorded.

In Ward 4, Brown also secured her seat during Monday’s recount. She received 192 votes compared to incumbent Arthur Craffey’s 174 votes. In the recount, Brown gained three votes while Craffey gained one.

Craffey congratulated Brown on her win following the recount.

“It was closely contested as the results showed,” said Craffey, wishing Brown the best of luck in her new role.

Brown said she was pleased with the results, and commended Craffey for being a gentleman during the campaign.

“I’d like to thank him for his hard work and service,” she said.khoughton@newstote.com
