UPDATED: Derry woman in Boston hospital after car leaves Interstate 93, strikes trees and rolls over

DERRY — A Derry woman suffered serious injuries Monday after she lost control of the car she was driving on Interstate 93, causing it to leave the road and roll over, New Hampshire State Police said.

Nancy McAvoy, 65, was taken to Parkland Medical Center and then flown by helicopter to Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston, according to state police.

A preliminary investigation shows that McAvoy was traveling in the northbound lane around 10:30 p.m. Possibly because of excess speed and the buildup of traffic in front of her, she slammed on the brakes, and the 2003 red Honda Civic went into a skid and left the road. The car struck several trees before rolling over, state police said.

McAvoy wasn’t ejected because she was wearing her seatbelt, according to state police.

State police and personnel from the Derry Fire Department responded to the scene. The crash occurred in Derry, just north of mile marker 9.4, state police said.

Traffic was backed up on Interstate 93 northbound following the crash. McAvoy was removed from the Civic and taken to the hospital.

Motorists hit their brakes and traffic slowed to a crawl on the busy highway. A tow truck was later brought in to move the vehicle from the wooded area.

State police didn’t say if alcohol was a factor. The crash remains under investigation by Trooper James Powers of New Hampshire Sate Police Troop B in Bedford.
