CONCORD — Gov. Maggie Hassan on Monday formally called for a special election in Executive Council District 1 to succeed to late 18-term councilor Ray Burton.
Burton died last Tuesday of kidney cancer at age 74.
Hassan announced that the primary election will be held on Jan. 21, 2014, with a general election to follow, if necessary, on March 11, 2014, town meeting day.
If only one candidate from each party files for the election, then no primary election will be necessary and the general election will be held on Jan. 21 instead of March 11.
Candidates can file for the seat at the Secretary of State’s Office at the State House on Nov. 25, 26, and 27, as well as Dec. 2.
“All of New Hampshire continues to mourn the passing of Ray Burton, one of the most dedicated and caring public servants that the North Country and our entire state have ever known,” Hassan said in a statement.
“Though no one can truly replace Councilor Burton, and the pain of his loss remains fresh, Ray would want the people’s work to move forward as quickly as possible,” she said.
Under provisions of state law, Hassan was required to set the special election date by Thursday of this week.
