UNH hockey, football teams both ranked

The University of New Hampshire’s football team moved two spots up to No. 21 in the latest Sports Network FCS Top 25 poll and the team went from being unranked last week to No. 24 in the FCS Coaches Poll.

It marks the 138th consecutive appearance in the Sports Network Poll for UNH, currently the longest streak in the nation.

The men’s hockey team, unranked last week, is now No. 20 in the land, according to the latest USCHO.com Division I men’s ice hockey poll. UNH was ranked as high as 13th in the polls on Sept. 30 and Oct. 14.

In a game that could determine their playoff fate, the Wildcats will host No. 4 Maine Saturday at noon in the annual Battle for the Brice-Cowell Musket. Maine (10-1, 7-0 CAA), has already clinched the Colonial Athletic Association championship. The game will be televised live on Comcast SportsNet New England.

Last week in a 37-20 road win against the University of Albany, UNH bumped its record to 6-4 overall. Dalton Crossan returned a kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown and added a 51-yard scamper into the end zone. Crossan finished with a career-high and game-high 185 all-purpose yards, Only a freshman, for his effort he was named CAA Football Rookie of the Week Monday, helping UNH to its fifth win over its last six games. UNH is 5-2 in the CAA.

On the ice hockey front, junior goalie Casey DeSmith, of Rochester, was named the Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week. It’s his first honor this season, sixth time in his career.

He stopped 22 shots in a 3-0 road win against Northeastern Friday and returned home to stop 31 shots in a 4-1 triumph against the Huskies. UNH (6-5-1) has a chance to climb higher in the polls next week.
