Brewster Academy product McGary returns, but Michigan falls

AMES, Iowa — Michigan came to Iowa State looking for its first real test.

The young Wolverines, ranked No. 7, got more than they could handle, even with Mitch McGary returning, losing to the Cyclones, 77-70 at a rowdy Hilton Coliseum.

Michigan (2-1) built an eight-point lead midway through the second half but poor interior defense continued to kill them.

The more experienced Cyclones (3-0) attacked the rim consistently in the second half, overcoming their poor outside shooting.

Michigan, which is the nation’s 11th-youngest team, settled for three pointers and not nearly enough dropped, hitting just 8-of-29 (27.6 percent).

The return of McGary, a product of Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, was encouraging, with him logging big minutes, but he was the only player with a physical presence.

Iowa State had the resilience of a home team and one that had a little more experience.

The return of McGary, who finished with nine points and six rebounds, was at least an individual success. From the moment he entered the game less than four minutes in, he was the dynamic presence everyone remembered from the NCAA Tournament.

His lower back condition that kept him from the first two games and both exhibitions, didn’t seem to bother him. He banged in the post, he ran the floor, showing his quick hands with four steals, and hit the deck a few times.
