Somersworth man gets 30 years for smothering ‘fussy’ toddler

DOVER — After pleading guilty to killing his girlfriend’s 2-year-old son, a Somersworth man was sentenced to spend the next 30 yearsin prison.

Jared Pope, 30, who previously lived on High Street in Somersworth, was charged with second-degree murder for “recklessly” smothering Noah York, 2, with a blanket, rope, a sheet, a pillow and a 15-pound duffle bag “because the child was fussing” on June 14.

He was sentenced to serve 30 years to life in N.H. State Prison. He also must pay $4,055 in restitution plus an administrative fee, participate in counseling, education or treatment and have no contact with his girlfriend or her family, according to court records.

If Pope follows the stipulations for the next 20 years, five years of the sentence could be suspended. He was credited for the 163 days of pretrial confinement, according to court records.

Both the state and Pope agreed to waive sentence review as part of the deal.

The child, who weighed about 30 pounds, struggled to get free before succumbing to the restraints, records indicate. Afterward, Pope, who was watching York with his own 1-year-old son while his girlfriend was out, told authorities that the toddler was choking “on some meat or milk.”

Ambulance crews took the toddler to Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover where he was later pronounced dead.

Pope eventually confessed after hospital staff confirmed there was no obstruction.
