NASHUA — The Board of Education approved several small changes to the teachers contract, and also voted unnanimously to accept a new schedule of salaries for administrators and other school staff.
The district has tweaked how it measures experience levels for candidates for teaching jobs. Salaries and annual raises are determined by each candidate’s level of education and years of experience in the classroom.
“There’s been confusion among teachers because of the years of experience,” said Superintendent Mark Conrad, adding that the new schedule ties salary steps and increases more clearly to the number of years of professional experience.
According to the new salary schedules, a new teacher with a bachelor’s degree and no experience will earn an entry-level base salary of $39,284 while a new hire with a master’s degree will take home $42,981.
Teachers with a bachelor’s degree and 14 years of experience will earn $65,048 while those with the same amount of experience and a master’s degree will be paid $69,546.Starting in 2015, the district will add new salary steps, or levels of pay for teachers with 16 and 17 years of experience. Under the current schedules, a teacher with bachelor’s degree tops out at a salary of $66,349. The new schedule will allow those teachers to earn $67,676.
Next year, the school district will begin to budget an additional $60,000 to cover the costs of additional kindergarten plannin, which will increase to 100 minutes a week
The bill for teacher’s health insurance for 2014 is roughly $15.1 million with teachers contributing $3.2 million or 21.3 percent of the premiums. The overall cost of dental insurance is increasing by about $28,000. Union officials have agreed to track costs and to try to contain spending.Also, according to the new contract, Teachers enrolled in advanced degree programs or courses related to their work are eligible for an 80 percent tuition reimbursement.
In addition to approving the language changes in the contract, which is expected to go the Board of Aldermen early next month, BOE members also approved a slate of pay raises for non-affiliated school staff who are not members of an employee union such as principals, assistant principals, school nurses and education specialists.
Raises depend on each person’s current annual salary. Those who now earn less than $50,000 will receive a 2 percent increase this year, while those whose salaries are above that threshold will receive a 1.8 percent raise.
Principal salaries at schools throughout the district will range from $89,075 to $104,854.
Assistant principals will earn salaries from $73,121 to $87,616.
