Auburn students get special visitor

AUBURN — Fifth-graders at Auburn Village School had a memorable Veterans Day.
Paul Monti paid a visit and told the children about his son, Jared, who was killed in Afghanistan in 2006 while serving in the U.S. Army and trying to save another soldier.
Paul Monti described how he drives his son's truck to feel closer to him.
The song "I Drive Your Truck" performed by Lee Brice recently won song of the year at the Country Music Association Awards in Nashville was inspired by Paul Monti's story.
Auburn teacher Carly Laliberte's class wrote letters to Monti because they wanted to let him know that they saw Medal of Honor recipient Jared as a hero.
A few days after the letters were sent, Laliberte and her students were surprised when Paul Monti visited the class to thank them for the heartwarming letters.
During his visit, he shared motivational stories, allowed students to ask questions, shared Jared's truck, and enlightened the class with his three rules: try your best, do the right thing, and never give up.
