Saint Raphael Church in Manchester to hold Advent concert on Dec. 3

December 01. 2013 8:31PM

MANCHESTER — “A Light in the Darkness” is this year’s candlelight service of music and readings at Saint Raphael the Archangel Parish in advance of Christmas. The event will be Tuesday, Dec. 3, at 7 p.m. in the church.

This annual Advent evening of music and meditation, featuring organ, piano, flute, violin and harp, is modeled loosely on the traditional Service of Lessons and Carols at King’s College, Cambridge University, in England. The concert will feature musicians, singers and readers from the Saint Raphael community, as well as from St. Anselm College.

In addition to the Saint Raphael choir, under the direction of Dennis Delay, the St. Anselm Chamber Music Ensemble, the Sacred Path Singers and harpist Oriana Kane will be among those contributing to the musical program. A series of readings will be drawn from contemporary and classic spiritual writers, as well as from Sacred Scripture. The welcome, opening and closing prayers will be provided by the Rev. Jerome Joseph Day, O.S.B., pastor.

Kerri Stanley, director of liturgy, has organized the concert.

Saint Raphael, located off South Main Street behind Sweeney Park on the West Side, is handicapped accessible. The concert is free and open to the public. Free-will offerings will be accepted gratefully.

Refreshments, under the direction of the high school youth ministry program at the parish, will be available after the concert in the parish hall.
