The first annual Deck the Poles Holiday Contest is bringing holiday cheer to downtown while raising money for local nonprofits.
In the new Greater Peterborough Chamber of Commerce contest being run in conjunction with the town, an individual, family, business or organization can "adopt" a town lamp post or other pole and decorate it in a holiday theme for a $10 registration fee, which goes toward publicity. When entrants sign up, they also choose a nonprofit member of the chamber to be the recipient of the cash prize if they win.
Each adopted pole is sponsored by a chamber member, who pays $100. A quarter of that money goes to publicity, but the remaining $75 goes in the pot and will be donated to the winning pole's chosen nonprofit.
"We were looking for a way to attract visitors and shoppers to Peterborough over a long time span cause they'll be up till the New Year," said Jack Burnett, executive director of the Greater Peterborough Chamber of Commerce.
So far, 11 poles have been adopted, but several dozen more are available. The chamber is keeping the registration open until Saturday, Dec. 7.
"It's a great way for people to have fun and also support nonprofits. It supports shoppers, it supports local merchants and it supports the local nonprofits. What's not to love; the holiday spirit is all wrapped up into one contest," Burnett said.
Burnett said people can register at the chamber office on Route 101 or online at www.greater-peterborough-chamber.com.
