Boy wounded by bullet was to be released

MANCHESTER — Police continue to investigate a shooting incident early Saturday morning in which a 5-year-old boy shot himself in the left hip.

The boy was taken to Elliot Hospital after the shooting, which happened about 2:30 a.m. in his third-floor residence at 420 Spruce St. Police Sgt. Maureen Tessier said the child was expected to be released from the hospital Monday.

The gun belonged to Sonday Bishop, who lives with the boy's mother. He referred to the boy as his son, De'Jon, but police said Bishop is not the boy's biological father. Police identified the boy's mother as Charmaine Beard.

Tessier said the investigation is continuing, but police believe the shooting was an accident. However it has not been determined whether any charges will be filed.

The gun was not secure and Bishop said the boy knew where the gun was kept.

"That's still a matter of conern," Tessier said.

Police seized a .22-caliber handgun from the apartment.
