Input sought on Keene board of ed candidates

KEENE — With four candidates asking to be appointed to a seat left vacant last month, the Keene Board of Education is seeking public input on the candidates.

This would be a short term appointment until March elections, SAU 29 superintendent Wayne Woolridge said Wednesday.

The four candidates who have applied for the vacant seat formerly held by Marjorie M. Droppa are Thomas F. Burke, James K. Carley, Shaun M. Filiault and Edward R. Murdough.

"None of these candidates have been on the board, but they are all exceptional candidates," Woolridge said. "Beginning with Jim Carley who was board chair in Marlborough for eight years," during which he helped the district build a new elementary school.

Carley is also a former chairman of the SAU 29 School Board, he said, and is the Associate Director of Facilities and Housing Operations at Keene State College.

Burke's experience includes serving on school boards in New Hampshire and Vermont. He also served as interim principal at Keene High School from 2011 to June 2013.

Filiault works as a field interview for Westat. He earned his high school diploma from Keene High School in 2000 and went on to become a professor of Health Education at Flinders University in Adelaide, Australia.

Murdough worked at the New Hampshire Department of Education in Concord as Administrator of the Bureau of School Approval and Facility Management from 2002 to 2012.

The board plans to interview, appoint and swear in the new board member at its Tuesday meeting at Keene High School.

The meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. with interviews scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m., Woolridge said.

A questionnaire has been distributed to the candidates and the public has until Tuesday to comment regarding the candidates to Woolridge at wwoolridge@sau29.org. All comments will be forwarded to board chairman Chris Coates.

"There's a window for the public to kind of share their feeling about candidates," Woolridge said.
