Body found floating in Sagamore Creek identified

PORTSMOUTH — A woman whose decomposed body was found floating in Sagamore Creek Tuesday afternoon has been identified as a 60-year-old Portsmouth woman. An autopsy was performed Wednesday on the body of Deborah A. Watman, of 600 Lafayette Road, but the cause of her death remains undetermined, police said in a news release.

Police said there was "no immediate reason for public safety concern."

According to police, Watman is believed to have spent time in the Portsmouth area. They're asking that her friends contact lead investigator Detective Scott Study at 610-7653 to share any information on her activities or recent whereabouts.

Watman's body was found just after 1 p.m. Tuesday by a construction worker underneath the Sagamore Creek Bridge along Sagamore Avenue.

Police Lt. Mark Newport said investigators aren't sure how long the body had been in the water.

Watman's body was located about 15 feet from the shore and was badly decomposed. Authorities had a difficult time determining the gender when the body was first removed from the water.

Fire Capt. Todd Germain said it appeared the body was in the water for "quite some time."

Before a positive identification was made Wednesday afternoon, the discovery fueled speculation the body could be that of missing University of New Hampshire student Elizabeth "Lizzi" Marriott.

Seth Mazzaglia, 31, is accused of murdering 19-year-old Marriott on Oct. 9, 2012, and dumping her body into the Piscataqua River from Peirce Island. The river and Sagamore Creek are linked.
