Website: Durham best in NH for young families, Hooksett, Littleton also rank high

DURHAM — The personal finance and credit card comparison website has named Durham the No. 1 town in New Hampshire for young families on a recent list that looked at the quality of public schools, affordability and growth.

Hooksett and Littleton ranked second and third, respectively.'s goal was to find the cities and towns in New Hampshire that offer young families places to settle down in affordable homes in communities that offer opportunities both in the job market and in schools.

The website measured schools' academic performance based on ratings from GreatSchools, a nonprofit that compares a given school's standardized test scores with the state average. It also looked at median home values in each town and ongoing monthly home costs, including mortgage payments, real estate taxes, insurance costs, utilities, fuel and other bills. It assessed a town's economy by looking at average household income and income growth over the last decade.

Durham Administrator Todd Selig said the designation celebrates what residents have known for years.

"Durham is a terrific place to live, work and raise a family. Anchored by the University of New Hampshire and the Oyster River Cooperative School District, along with rich natural resources and high quality municipal services, there is a lot to like about our town," Selig said.

According to's rankings, median home values in Durham are around $303,000 with median household income at $55,333.
