Manchester man charged with robbing store 3 times

MANCHESTER — Police said a city man pushed his luck by trying to rob the store across the street from his apartment three times.

Russell Bivens, 27, of 137 Massabesic St., was arraigned on three robbery charges Monday in Manchester District Court and bail was continued at $50,000 cash/surety.

Bivens' luck ran out Sunday when he entered the Shop-N-Go store at 188 Massabesic St. Police said when a man wearing a hooded sweatshirt and sunglasses entered the store about 8 a.m. and confronted a female clerk, saying he had a weapon, and demanded money, the clerk hit him with a wooden pole she had hidden near the checkout counter.

The would-be robber fled and the clerk went after him, watching as he ran across the street and into an apartment, police said.

Bivens is charged with robbing the same store Saturday, at 11:22 a.m., when he obtained about $150, and on Thanksgiving, when he was given about $100.

In the earlier robberies, he also claimed to have a weapon, but no weapon was shown on any of the three occasions, according to police.

At Bivens' arraignment, police prosecutor Lt. Peter Favreau said Bivens is wanted in Massachusetts in connection with an assault.

Conditions of his $50,000 cash/surety bail include a ban on contact with the three Shop-N-Go employees and bar him from the store.

Because no plea can be entered to a felony in Circuit Court, a probable cause hearing was set for Dec. 18.
