Two armed robberies overnight in Manchester

MANCHESTER — Police are investigating two armed robberies overnight, one involving a gun and the other, a small bat.

The first robbery happened about 10:40 p.m. Tuesday at the Union Street Market, 621 Union St.

A masked man entered the store, pointed a handgun at the clerk and demanded cash.

The clerk complied and the robber fled with some cash and several packs of cigarettes.

Patrol officer Tom Whelan, searching the area for the robber, who last was seen running toward Pine and High streets, spotted a man walking in an alley who matched the robber's description and detained him.

The man, identified by police as Charles Shadle, 26, had loose change on him and three packs of cigarettes, consistent with what was taken from the store, according to police. That, with other information obtained in the investigation, led to Shadle being identified as the alleged robber. Shadle, who gave his address as the soup kitchen, was arrested and charged with robbery.

Shadle could enter no plea to the felony robbery charge Wednesday morning in 9th Circuit Court, Manchester District Division, so a probable cause hearing was set for Dec. 23.

A police prosecutor successfully requested $25,000 cash/surety bail for Shadle, saying he is under the umbrella of a Rockingham County Superior Court conviction for felonious sexual assault and there is a 72-hour probation/parole hold on him.  Prosecutor Kris Taylor said Shadle has drug convictions, adding; "He admits to having a drug problem."

Police have not recovered the gun.

The second robbery happened about 1:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Shell station, 887 Hanover St.

The 33-year-old clerk told police a man with a bat entered the store and demanded cash. He took money from the register and then ran out, heading west on Lake Avenue from Hanover Street.

The robber is described as a white man, 25 to 35 years old, about 6-feet tall with a thin build. He wore a dark-blue, hooded sweatshirt with a white shirt underneath, dirty blue jeans and tan work boots.

He covered his face with a dark blue T-shirt with holes cut out so he could see.

Anyone with information about the gas station robbery is asked to call police at 668-8711. Anonymous tips for cash rewards may be made through Manchester Crimeline at 624-4040 or online at manchestercrimeline.org.
