Kenney won't suspend campaign despite death of his mother

WAKEFIELD - Executive Council candidate Joe Kenney will not suspend his campaign following the death of his mother, Betty, he said in a release.

"I'm going to get out there and let people know that I care about them and putting people first," Kenney, a former state senator, said in a statement. "As well as being a great mom, I will greatly miss her advice, counsel and support. I am devoting the rest of my campaign to her memory."

Betty Kenney was a former state representative.

Kenney is running to fill the seat vacated when longtime Councilor Ray Burton died last month.

He is set to square off in a Jan. 21 Republican primary against former Belknap County Commissioner Christopher Boothby of Meredith and Mark Aldrich of Lebanon, a former state director for former U.S. Sens. Gordon Humphrey and Bob Smith.

The winner of the Republican primary will face the only Democrat in the field, Grafton County Commissioner Michael Cryans of Hanover, in a March 11 election.
