Good-natured talk leads to friendly bet in UNH game

HAMMOND, La. - Robin Roberts was going with the Lions.

The Daily Star, the local newspaper, ran a picture on the front page on Saturday of the "Good Morning America" host with a few Southeastern Louisiana University fans.

The fans were visiting New York City and they and Roberts were holding a sign that read, "Geaux SLU Lions" in support of the team's Saturday night playoff game against New Hampshire.

Roberts is a graduate of Southeastern and was a star basketball player at the school.

The front page also carried a story detailing some good-natured pregame bantering between Durham town administrator Todd Selig and Hammond mayor Mason Foster.

Foster called Selig last week and proposed a friendly wager on the game, the story said.

Foster's putting up a bottle of Louisiana Hot Sauce against Selig's pint of New Hampshire maple syrup.

"Hammond is clearly a terrific community with a tremendous amount of local support of SLU," Selig told the paper. "I'll almost feel bad when the Wildcats kick some furry Lion butt on Saturday, almost."

The winner of Saturday night's New Hampshire at Southeastern Louisiana game advances to a semifinal game against North Dakota State, which has won the last two FCS titles, next weekend.

The Bison took out Coastal Carolina, 48-14, on Saturday afternoon.

Towson earned its spot in the semifinals with a 49-39 win at Eastern Illinois on Friday night.

Junior running back Terrance West rushed for 354 yards and five touchdowns for the Tigers.

UNH has seen that show. West went for 238 yards and three TDs in a 44-28 win over the Wildcats on Oct. 5.

UNH had won eight of its last nine games since Towson going into Saturday night's game.

Towson beat UNH, 64-35, in the final game of the regular season last year.
