Goffstown committee to complete school budget review
If approved, the projected local school tax rate would be $15.04, an increase of $1.34 per $1,000 assessed property value over last year's budget, or $335.80 on a $250,000 home. The default budget is $36 million, with a local school tax rate of $14.80, an increase of $1.10 per $1,000 assessed property value, or $274.86 on a $250,000 home.
"I think the school board listened to the will of the people and took it seriously," he said.
"It makes a big difference," he said.
At the budget committee's Dec. 12 meeting, members cut the budget by about $47,000 after reviewing each school's budget and the district's general fund budget. The committee eliminated a proposed district grounds custodian position, a late bus for the high school, some field trip transportation costs, and an administrative salary pool.
"I think this is an excellent budget for a regular year, but we need to start looking at areas that have been off limits and start making some drastic changes," she said. "Revenues are down by about $1 million."
The superintendent of schools earns an annual salary of about $120,000, and assistant superintendents earn about $100,000. However, prior to being named the interim, Balke had served as an assistant superintendent for student services, which included special education, guidance and nurses, and the state's Section 504 for children with disabilities. His former position has remained vacant. He said the school board saw the need to add the job to the 2014-15 budget. The other assistant's duties include overseeing the curriculum, and instructional aptitudes.
The committee voted not to cut the library positions, and Balke and Principal Wendy Hastings are hoping the teaching position will also remain intact.
