Red Sox deal Morales for backup infielder

Looking to add infield depth, the Red Sox on Wednesday acquired switch-hitting Jonathan Herrera from the Rockies in exchange for left-handed reliever Franklin Morales and minor-league pitcher Chris Martin, according to MLB.com.

Herrera, 28, hit .292 in 81 games for the Rockies, with one home run and 16 RBIs. His acquisition likely ends veteran infielder John McDonald's brief tenure with the Sox, but probably won't factor into whether Boston re-signs free-agent shortstop Stephen Drew.

Purchased from Colorado in May 2011, Morales, 27, went 2-2 with a 4.62 ERA in 20 appearances for the Red Sox in 2013. The Red Sox were attracted by his ability to pitch out of the bullpen or as a starter, but he spent much of the past two seasons on the disabled list and struggled with his control when healthy.

Martin, also 27, is a 6-foot, 7-inch right-hander who spent 2013 pitching out of the bullpen for Double-A Portland and Triple-A Pawtucket, where he finished the season.

The Rockies also made a trade with Cleveland, MLB.com reported, sending left-handed pitcher Josh Outman to the Indians in exchange for outfielder Drew Stubbs.

Outman, 29, was 3-0 with a 4.33 ERA in 61 relief appearances for Colorado last season, limiting left-handed batters to a .198 batting average.

Stubbs, 29, spent last season with the Indians after four years with the Cincinnati Reds. He hit .233 with 10 home runs and 45 RBIs in 146 games in 2013. He is considered a good base-stealer and defensive outfielder likely to serve as a primary reserve with Carlos Gonzalez expected to start in center field next season.
