NASHUA — There have undoubtedly been better starts to an NHIAA girls' basketball game, but probably not many.

Bedford scored the game's first 22 points Monday night and breezed to a 48-25 road triumph over Bishop Guertin of Nashua.

Bedford led 13-0 after one quarter, 30-6 at halftime and 39-14 after three. The Bulldogs, who beat BG in last season's Division I championship game (39-38), raised their record to 2-0.

"I couldn't have thought of any better way to start," Bedford coach Sue Thomas said. "We scored off the tip for the second game in a row. They were nervous about this game so getting that first basket was great. Then they all stepped up.

"Was I surprised (at the margin of victory)? Yes. I was surprised and thrilled."

BG missed its first 12 free throw attempts, 10 of which came in the first half. The Cardinals didn't score until 3:50 remained in the half, when a Jamie Sherburne basket made it a 22-2 game. The Cardinals finished the game with three made free throws in 19 attempts.

The loss dropped BG's record to 2-1.

"Bedford is definitely the team to beat in the state," BG coach Jeremy Faulkner said. "When you go 0 for 12 from the free throw line and miss some baskets that roll around the hoop it just demoralizes the girls. You can't help but be frustrated. All the girls see are the points (on the scoreboard) and not what could have been.

"That's the difference between a team that's experienced and a team that's rebuilding. They make their shots when it counts. We have the talent, but we have things we need to fix. Like I told the girls, this was not the championship game."

Senior guard Rachel Collins led Bedford with 16 points, including two 3-pointers.

The Bulldogs received 10 points from senior forward Ali Glennon.

Senior guard Gigi Piercy led the Cardinals with eight points. Guard Emma Williams finished with six on a pair of 3-pointers.

BG, which lost three starters to graduation — including Meghan Green, now playing for Boston University — opened its season with victories over Salem (49-38) and Nashua North (46-44).
