Timberlane schools regain resource officer

PLAISTOW — A new school resource officer began working in the Timberlane district schools shortly before the winter break.

Ryan Garney, who has been with the Plaistow Police Department since 2012, will work in the school district as the resource officer three days per week, according to Superintendent Earl Metzler.

“Officer Ryan Garney had the chance to go through the middle school, the high school, and the (performing arts center),” said Metzler. “I’d like to thank (police) Chief (Stephen) Savage and the Plaistow Police Department, and we will continue to work together to improve these opportunities as we go.”

Garney replaces Plaistow police officer Joan Marsilia, who served as the school resource officer in the school district for more than a decade.

Earlier in the fall, Metzler discounted reports that he was responsible for dismissing Marsilia as the resource officer in the schools, noting that he is not in charge of the police department and has no power to reassign a resource officer.

Metzler also said that there was no discord between he and Savage and that he has worked closely with the Plaistow Police Department.

Garney is a graduate of Roger Williams University with a criminal justice degree, has experience working with children, and previously worked at a juvenile detention center.

During discussions with the School Board earlier this fall, Metzler said there is also the possibility of looking at adding a second school resource officer to the district.

A second officer would help improve coverage at the middle school and the performing arts center, according to the superintendent.
