MANCHESTER - The Biron Bridge on the city's West Side is closed to traffic due to a water main break Thursday morning.
Police advise motorists to seek alternate routes. Emergency repairs are expected to last well into the evening hours, and the bridge is expected to be closed to traffic throughout the day, according to a police release.
Kelley Street is closed at Upland Street due to the break in the middle of Kelley Street, a block from the steel Rimmon Heights sign at the top of the hill.
Manchester Water Works crews were on the scene.
Kelley Street is an important road in the city's West Side, but as bad as the break appears to be, only a couple of houses may be affected, given the location near the Piscataquog River, according to Guy Chabot, deputy director-distribution for Manchester Water Works.
"This is going to take a lot of work," Chabot said while inspecting the break, water gushing through a rupture in the pavement and streaming down the street toward the river.
There are two mains beneath the road, a 16-inch main and a 12-inch main. One of them has a long crack in it. Chabot said the cast-iron pipe was about 50 years old.
