H.S. Holiday Basketball Tournament Roundup: Brady, Merrimack Valley get wins

In first round boys’ action of the 43rd annual Concord Area Holiday Tournament at NHTI on Thursday, Bishop Brady and Merrimack Valley were winners.

In the fifth game of the tournament, Bishop Brady’s Brendan Johnson erupted for 26 points. Jordain Bell added 13 points and seven assists to lead Brady past a stingy Hopkinton team, 73-56.

Merrimack Valley rushed out to an early lead and never looked back coasting to a 59-35 win over John Stark in the sixth game of the tournament. Merrimack Valley’s big 6-foot-6 post player Justin Williams led the way with 14 points and eight boards.

In the seventh game of the tournament, Concord used a well-rounded attack to pull away in the second half versus Kearsarge to win 63-40 and advance to the semi-finals. Concord was led by Walter Szulc’s 24 points.

Pembroke jumped out to an early lead in the nightcap and never looked back led by stellar senior guard Pat Welch’s 39 points. The Spartans roared to a very comfortable 49-30 at the half despite a fine effort by Bow’s Adam Nelson, who finished with a team-high 21 points.

Concord Area Holiday Tournament

Girls:
Bishop Brady, Merrimack Valley, Concord and Pembroke Academy emerged as the winners in first round girls’ action of the 43rd annual Concord Area Holiday Tournament at NHTI on Thursday.

In the first game, Rieselly Deoleo led the Green Giants with 15 points as Bishop Brady pulled away from Hopkinton, 45-30, in the fourth quarter. Hopkinton’s Sabray Montore scored nine points and added four assists for the Hawks.

Merrimack Valley rushed out to an early lead back coasted to a 51-11 win over John Stark. Molly Mullen and Cassidy Huckins led the Pride.

In game three, Concord pulled away from Kearsarge in the second half en route to a 48-25 win led by Cassidy Emerson and Peyton Osgood.

Pembroke built an early cushion and defeated Bow, 59-27, led by Hannah Seidner and Kaylie Montminy’s 13 points. Kirsten Bresson led Bow with 11 points and 4 assists.

On Friday, in the girl’s consolation games, Bow will play Kearsarge at 10 a.m. and John Stark will play Hopkinton at 11:30 a.m.
