School schedules grief counseling after fatality

DERRY — Pinkerton Academy will hold grief counseling today for students affected by the death of a fellow student from injuries suffered in a New Year's Eve crash.

The Pinkerton community went into mourning after junior Kyle Ross, 17, of Derry, died Wednesday afternoon.

Another Pinkerton student who was a passenger in the car, Johanna Morse, 16, of Derry, remained in critical condition at Tuft's Medical Center in Boston Friday, a hospital spokesman said.

To help students cope with the tragedy, grief counselors will be available today on the high school's campus, Headmaster Mary Anderson said.

Administrators said the services are customarily offered following tragic incidents.

Students have been away from school since Christmas break began last month as a snowstorm forced the cancellation of classes on Thursday and Friday. Classes are scheduled to resume on Monday.

Ross was driving at high rate of speed and went out of control and slammed into a tree at Gulf Road and Hampshire Drive late Tuesday night, according to police.

A third Pinkerton student, Thompson Upham-Davis, 16, of Chester, suffered injuries that were not life-threatening, according to police.

Ross's death provoked an emotional response from his fellow students and others at the high school.

"The Pinkerton community is heartbroken," Anderson said Thursday. "We extend our deepest condolences to the family of Kyle Ross, and we offer our heartfelt prayers and thoughts for Johanna's recovery."

Students who knew the popular junior posted numerous responses on Facebook and Twitter, with many also offering support for Morse.

Information on funeral services for Ross wasn't available Friday at Peabody Funeral Home in Derry. The family was still in the process of arranging services, a funeral home representative said.

The crash is under investigation by the Derry police crash team, police Capt. Vern Thomas said.
