College Roundup: Santo leads way for St. A
Chris Santo led a balanced scoring attack for the St. Anselm College men's basketball team in an 80-75 win over St. Rose at home Saturday.
Santo scored 20 points and added nine rebounds to help the Hawks improve to 8-4 overall and 6-2 in Northeast 10 play. St. Rose fell to 7-6, 4-3.
Also chipping in for the Hawks were Roy Mabrey (18 points), Mike McCahey (12 points) and John Nielson (12 points).
Sacred Heart 66, UNH 53: John Edwards' 13 points led the way for the Wildcats (2-11) in Durham. Jordan Bronner added 11 points.
Daniel Webster 103, New England College 96: Daniel Webster rallied from a 27-point deficit halfway through the second half to upend the Pilgrims in Nashua. Ryan Gauthier, of Nashua, and Daris Cosby scored 29 points each for the Eagles, who remained undefeated (9-0).
Eastern Connecticut 61, Plymouth State 49: Visiting Eastern Connecticut, ranked 22nd in the most recent D3hoops.com national poll, scored the first 19 points of the game and cruised to the win. Petey Skevas' 16 points led the hosts (6-5, 1-1 in Little East play).
Keene State 74, Austin College 68 (OT): In Tavernier, Fla., the Owls won the Key Largo Classic Championship on Wednesday with an overtime win against Austin College of Texas. The Owls (6-3) trailed by two points with six seconds to go in the championship game before freshman Stephanie D'Annolfo hit a pair of free throws to send the game into overtime. Kelsey Cognetta led Keene State with a career-high 26 points, while Christan Wojtas of Amherst had 18 points and D'Annolfo - who was named tournament MVP - had 12 points.
UNH 77, Brown 74 (OT): On Friday in Providence, the Wildcats used a career-high 30 points from freshman guard Kristen Anderson to beat the Bears in a non-league game. UNH (5-7) also received 20 points and nine rebounds from Elizabeth Belanger.
Eastern Connecticut State 59, Plymouth State 38: Sophomore Taylor Perry led the Panthers (0-9, 0-2 in the Little East) with 15 points. Loudon's Krystin Corliss added nine points for PSU.
Plymouth State 3, Nichols 2: The Plymouth State University women's hockey team notched a pair of third-period goals to rally past Nichols College on Friday in the first game of the Doubletree Women's Ice Hockey Classic at Cairns Arena in South Burlington, Vt.
Plymouth State's Freshman Emily Auby and junior Kate Banys scored goals six minutes apart in the third period to erase a 2-1 deficit. Plymouth State senior goaltender Ali Ponte made 23 saves to earn the win.
Sacred Heart 2, Plymouth State 1: In Saturday's game at the Doubletree Classic, Auby's goal was the only marker for the Panthers, who slipped to 3-8.
Boston U. 3, Dartmouth 2: Freshman Robyn Chemago played well in net in a losing effort for Dartmouth (3-12), making 28 saves at Walter Brown Arena in Boston.
Amherst 4, Plymouth State 3: In Northfield, Vt., sophomore Brendan Burke had a goal and two assists to lead nationally-ranked Amherst College past Plymouth State on Friday in the first game of the Northfield Savings Bank Men's Ice Hockey Holiday Tournament at Kreitzberg Arena.
Junior Chad Barthelmess led the Panthers (4-7) with a goal and an assist. Goalie Gordon Ceasar, a transfer from Utica College, made his PSU debut and finished with 31 saves.
