Bedford girls (3-0) too much for Central

BEDFORD — Speed and a smothering defense were too much for Manchester Central as Bedford stayed undefeated with a 67-27 girls’ basketball victory on Monday.

Bedford (3-0) is winning by an average of 33 points per game. The Little Green fell to 1-2.

The Bulldogs came out with a backcourt press right from the start, which caused Central to turn the ball over 12 times in the first quarter alone.

Nikki Tucci led the Bulldogs in scoring with 16 points.

“If you come out and make mistakes, it turns into three, four, five baskets in a row,” said Central coach Mike Wenners. “They force you to make decisions under duress.”

Bedford converted those turnovers into points, starting the game with an 8-0 run.

“We tend to play better when we play all out,” said Bedford coach Sue Thomas. “It’s what we started with and it seems to work out.”

Central didn’t score its first points until 7:20 into the game. Then Bedford went on a 10-0 run. Bedford was up 20-4 after one quarter and 43-15 at the half.

“We love to score off the break,” said Thomas. “We have a good half-court offense but we try to run the other team off the court when we can.”

In addition to Tucci’s 16 points, McKenzie Brown had 14 and Haley Driscoll had 12 for Bedford. Amanda Gaudreault led Central scorers with six points.
