Campbell girls rout Conant in girls' basketball

LITCHFIELD — Because each team was unbeaten, Tuesday night’s Division III girls’ basketball game between Campbell of Litchfield and Conant of Jaffrey looked like a good matchup on paper.

On the court, it looked like a mismatch.

Campbell scored the game’s first 15 points and improved to 4-0 by posting a 69-28 victory.

“The girls came into the game and our coaching staff came into the game ready,” Campbell coach Bobby Allan said. “These girls are in here every day working and that work shows up in games. When you open up a lead like that it’s about holding the lead and continuing to work hard. That’s what we did tonight.”

Cambell’s Hannah Neild, a junior guard, led all scorers with 23 points. Neild also had nine assists and nine rebounds.

“She’s our quarterback on the floor,” Allan said. “She loves to come to the gym, loves to get extra shots up, and loves to go to work. I can honestly say that about all my girls this year.”

Campbell received 14 from Hannah Fabiano, nine from Kylie Julia and eight from Alex Trevains.

The Cougars led 34-8 at halftime and 51-17 entering the fourth.

Conant, which also entered the game 3-0, was held to two field goals in the first half. The Orioles didn’t score until 2:03 remained in the first quarter, and made their first field goal with 5:36 left in the second.

“This is going to be a tough, tough team,” Conant coach Daniel Rosenfield said when asked about Campbell. “I like the coach and I like the kids, but if I never saw them again it would be fine with me. I don’t know if they’re always this good, but they were very good tonight.

“I think if you were handicapping this game we were a prohibitive underdog, but I had hoped that we would do better than we did. We didn’t have a lot of bright spots, but we always work hard.”

Sophomore center Sarah Gonsalves led Conant with 15.

“This is a big game for us,” Allan said. “Conant is circled on our schedule. We have a great tradition here at Campbell. Last year was a rebuilding year (Campbell lost in the Division III tournament’s first round), but a game like this shows our tradition is coming back.”
