Pembroke girls top Merrimack Valley

PEMBROKE — Despite a furious fourth-quarter rally by Merrimack Valley, Pembroke Academy held on for a 48-45 win Tuesday.

The Spartans held an 11-point lead at the end of three quarters, but MV began to play a press defense to force turnovers. But the Pride couldn’t convert turnovers into points, going cold from the floor and from the line, allowing Pembroke to hang on for the win.

The teams met just 10 days ago in the finals of the Capital City Holiday Classic in Concord. Merrimack Valley won that game, 43-38.

“It’s character-building” said Pembroke coach Josh Goldstein. “We’ve been in this situation before, losing a big lead, and we’ve come out on top.”

Hannah Seidner led the Spartans with 17 points, including four 3-pointers. Pembroke’s Karli Loiselle had 13 points and made two critical free throws late.

Cassidy Huckins led MV with 19 points, and five 3-pointers.
