A home for Rusty: Pelham horse heading to Candia

PELHAM — An aging Pelham horse is headed for greener pastures this weekend.

Rusty, a 21-year-old quarter horse gelding, whose owner, Ralph Barrett III, is facing financial difficulties, will soon be a resident of Sunset View Stables in Candia.

Kaitlyn Morrill, owner of the equine retirement farm, contacted Barrett after reading about Rusty's plight in Wednesday's New Hampshire Union Leader. Rusty is scheduled to be transported to Candia on Saturday.

Meanwhile, funds to assist the farm with Rusty's care are being collected by the Animal Rescue Network of New England, a Pelham-based nonprofit that typically assists homeless dogs and cats.
"It's certainly worked out for the best," Pelham Animal Control Officer Allison Caprigno said Wednesday afternoon. "He's going to a great place."
Barrett had been keeping Rusty in a pen behind his Russell Drive home for the past several years, but is now facing foreclosure and must vacate the property by month's end.

He had been looking for a new home for Rusty over the past several weeks, but was discouraged after learning some area rescues charged a $600 surrender fee.

Those wishing to assist with Rusty's veterinary, dental, farrier and food expenses are encouraged to visit the www.fundrazr.com website and click in "Rusty — Local NH Horse Needing Help" in the search box.

Morrill said she'll be posting updates on Rusty's progress in his new home via the farm's Facebook page, www.facebook.com/sunsetviewstables.aguilmet@newstote.com
