Dartmouth picks provost

CAROLYN DEVER

HANOVER — Dartmouth College has named Carolyn Dever, dean of the College of Arts and Science at Vanderbilt University, Dartmouth’s new provost.

The scholar of gender studies and 19th-century British literature and culture, will also serve as a faculty member of Dartmouth’s Department of English.

She will begin work as provost July 1 and will play a large role in long-range institutional planning and implementation, including the integration of academic and student-life programs.

“I am delighted to welcome Carolyn to Dartmouth,” President Philip Hanlon said in the announcement. “She is an eminent teacher and scholar who brings a depth of experience in higher education administration to this key leadership position.”

Dever was appointed Vanderbilt’s Arts and Science dean in December 2008. She was responsible for 45 academic departments and interdisciplinary programs; 13 research centers in the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities; 382 faculty; 800 staff members; and a $180 million annual budget.

Dever is a professor of English and the author of two books on literary criticism and gender studies. Before she joined Vanderbilt faculty in 1999, she was a tenured faculty member at New York University.

She earned her bachelor’s degree in English and American literature from Boston College and her doctorate in English and American literature and language from Harvard University.

Her husband Paul Young and their four-year-old son Noah will join her in Hanover. Young, a professor of film and media studies, will join Dartmouth faculty as a professor.

Dever will take over for Martin Wybourne, who served as interim provost since July 2012 when former Provost Carol Folt stepped in as interim president following President Jim Yong Kim’s election to president of the World Bank.
