Derry woman arrested on burglary charges

Usher

DERRY — Police are investigating whether a local woman who was arrested on burglary charges Wednesday could be connected to a string of recent burglaries in Derry and several other surrounding towns.

Bonnie Usher, 46, 13L Blackberry Road is charged with burglary and attempted burglary, police said. She was also arrested on two Derry police warrants charging her with theft by deception and receiving stolen property, Derry police Capt. Vern Thomas said.

Usher was arrested by Derry detectives on Wednesday after stopping her vehicle on South Main Street. The detectives had just seen Usher go into a residence on Kingsbury Street and leave a few minutes later carrying property from that house, Thomas said. Officers then checked the house and discovered that it had been burglarized.

Neighbors on Dexter Avenue reported that they observed a woman matching Usher’s description a short time earlier prowling around a house on that street whose owners were not home. The woman left after she was confronted by an alert neighbor, Thomas said.

Derry has experienced more than a dozen residential burglaries in the past six weeks involving the theft of money and jewelry. Derry detectives are working with police in several other surrounding communities where other similar break-ins have occurred, Thomas said.

The towns include Londonderry, Salem and Auburn, Thomas said. Police do not believe Usher is part of a theft ring. Future charges are possible, Thomas said.

Usher is alleged to have pawned several jewelry items at “Cash for Gold” in Derry on Jan. 14. Those items were identified as having been stolen in a burglary on Dustin Avenue on Jan. 2, Thomas said.

Usher was arraigned Thursday morning in the 10th Circuit Court in Derry. She is being held on $15,000 cash bail and has a probable cause hearing scheduled at the Derry court on Jan. 23.
