NH Aububon’s bird survey is slated for Feb. 8-9

CONCORD — The New Hampshire Audubon Society’s annual backyard winter bird survey, in which volunteers help biologists track changes in the distribution and numbers of bird species, is set for the weekend of Feb. 8, the organization said in a release.

“The strength of the survey is that we can look at trends over the long term,” survey coordinator Rebecca Suomala said in a statement. “We now have more than 25 years of data and we can see the patterns of ups and downs in different bird species.”

Each year about 1,300 observers across the state count the birds coming to their feeders.

Anyone can participate in the survey by counting the birds in their backyard on the survey weekend and reporting online or sending the results to the New Hampshire Audubon. To receive a copy of the reporting form and instructions on how to participate, send a self-addressed, stamped, long envelope to: New Hampshire Audubon, Winter Bird Survey, 84 Silk Farm Road, Concord, NH 03301.

Forms are also available at Audubon centers in Auburn, Concord and Manchester, and online. More information is available at nhaudubon.org.
