Pelham selectmen call administrator decision ‘personnel issue’

PELHAM — There are few details being released about selectmen’s decision to place Town Administrator Tom Gaydos on administrative leave.

Selectman William McDevitt stated that it is a personnel issue, and that Police Chief Joseph Roark will be covering the administrator’s duties while Gaydos is on leave.

“This is not a criminal matter, it is a personnel issue,” McDevitt said.

Gaydos was placed on leave following an emergency nonpublic meeting at Town Hall on Jan. 9. Town employees were notified of the decision shortly after the decision.

Selectmen did not indicate whether it was paid or unpaid leave, or how long they believed Gaydos would be on leave other than to say that they hoped the issue would be resolved quickly.

McDevitt said more information about the issue could be made public at selectmen’s regular meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 21.

“We hope we can get this cleared up as soon as possible,” said McDevitt. “It’s not a pleasant experience for anyone.”

McDevitt also said there was no hidden meaning to Roark being asked to take over some Town Administrator duties during Gaydos’ leave, as he said some have suggested.

“Chief Roark’s office is 25 feet from (the administrator’s) office,” he said. “It’s just easier for him to keep an eye on things.”

Gaydos has been the town administrator since 2002.
