KEENE — Keene Housing has again received a grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to support its Resident Self Reliance program.

U.S. Rep. Annie Kuster announced the $128,990 federal grant last week.

“This grant will make a big difference in the lives of some of our most vulnerable friends and neighbors,” Kuster said in her announcement. “To achieve self-sufficiency, it is essential that all Granite Staters can access the education and professional services they need. This funding will help Keene Housing continue its important work supporting the people of Keene and of the Monadnock Region.”

The grant will be used to help connect local families with education and employment services, Keene Housing’s Executive Director Joshua Meehan said Friday.

The HUD grant enables Keene Housing to retain two service coordinators to work with participants in its Resident Self Reliance program.

“We’re extremely pleased to get this grant once again this year; without it we would have a very difficult time maintaining our Resident Self Reliance program that helps low-income working families acquire the skills they need to retain housing with the ultimate goal of reaching self-sufficiency so they no longer need us,” Meehan said.

Keene Housing has received the federal grant for the past six years, he said.

“It’s a highly competitive grant and the fact that we’ve been able to secure it so many years in a row speaks highly of our program, but just as much it speaks highly of our staff,” Meehan said.
