Freshman's buzzer-beater lifts Campbell

Freshman Harrison Vedrani's lay-up with one second left capped a game-ending 8-0 run to lead Campbell of Litchfield to a 50-49 upset win over defending Division III boys' basketball champion Conant of Jaffrey in Litchfield Monday night.

Campbell (3-2), playing with no seniors this season, handed Conant its first loss of the season in seven outings. Last year the Cougars were the only team to beat the Orioles, winning in Jaffrey. Conant avenged that loss in the Division III final.

Down 49-42 with 1:43 to play, Campbell had no timeouts left when it started its comeback.

Zach Bergeon (six of his team-high 14 points in the fourth period) started the comeback with a layup. A jumper from Justin DiBenedetto (five fourth-period points) cut the deficit to three. Bergeon whittled it to 49-48 with 21 seconds left with two free throws.

Campbell fouled Conant with 11 seconds remaining and the Orioles missed their one-and-one attempt from the free throw line. With no timeout to call, Andrew Smarse of Campbell dribbled the ball across the center court line before finding Vedrani (12 points) in the paint for his game-winning layup before time expired.

Rob O'Brien had 15 points for Conant, which trailed 14-7 after the first stanza and 24-21 at halftime. Conant led 36-33 with eight minutes to play. Eli Hodgson had 13 points in the loss for the Orioles.
