Portsmouth man indicted for robbery of Five Cent Bank

BRENTWOOD — A man who allegedly robbed a Portsmouth bank, changed his clothes nearby and pedaled off on a bicycle has been indicted for a single count of robbery.

Jamie Pointer, 29, of Ledgewood Drive in Portsmouth, could face up to 3½ to 7 years in prison for making off with an undisclosed amount of cash for Newburyport Five Cent Bank on State Street.

Pointer was indicted on the charge in Rockingham County Superior Court.

Pointer passed a note to a clerk saying that “armed men would take the building by force” if she did not give him money, according to an indictment.

Pointer became a suspect after police identified him as someone familiar to law enforcement.

A state police trooper and a Portsmouth police officer found Pointer about 30 minutes after the robbery on Grafton Road, police said.
