Yoga Day fundraising event expands to full weekend

KEENE — In its seventh incarnation, Yoga Day has expanded to a two-day event.

Yoga Weekend is Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Home Healthcare, Hospice and Community Services office on Marlboro Street.

The event was created by Home Healthcare, Hospice and Community Services volunteer and yoga teacher Josephine Russell.

"Last year we made about $12,000. The year before that it was about $7,000, so it is definitely growing," Marilyn Shriver, director of development at Home Healthcare, Hospice and Community Services, who organizes the event with Russell.

Yoga Day was always held on a Sunday, Shriver said. This year Russell and her son Bryan Russell, who is a yoga instructor, wanted to open the event up to people who cannot attend on Sunday, Shriver said.

"Over the two days there will be more than 50 classes over 40 instructors," Shriver said.

There are also several other activities from massage, chanting, meditation and acupuncture for people to try.

Admission is by donation, and there are gift bags at the $40, $75 and $100 or more level, Shriver said."It supports the general program, which could be care for people who are uninsured or under insured. A lot of people have insurance, but they have outrageous deductibles. We also use the money to provide items that are not covered by insurance, but can profoundly affect the quality of life of the hospice patient and their family."

Doors open at 8 a.m. with classes starting at 9 a.m. Breakfast and lunch are being donated by the Works in Keene.
