Caregiver charged with abusing disabled Nashua man

NASHUA — The caretaker of a mentally disabled Nashua man is facing 23 counts of aggravated felonious sexual assault against the 24-year-old victim.

Police allege that John “Jack” Holland, 74, of 3 Kessler Farm Dr., apt. 111, sexually abused an adult male with developmental delays throughout the past two years.

Authorities began investigating after employees at Somerset Apartment where Holland resides reported an inappropriate relationship between Holland and the victim.

Holland served as a caretaker for the victim, who is unable to care for himself in a manner necessary for a 24-year-old male, according to a police affidavit filed by Detective Lakeisha Phelps of the Nashua Police Department.

One of the employees at the apartment complex told police that she overheard a telephone conversation between Holland and the victim during the first week of January, prompting her concern for the disabled man.

According to Phelps, the victim — whose name is being withheld to protect his identity — has low intellectual functioning and developmental delays in language skills, gross motor skills and fine motor skills that limit his communication abilities, among other skills.

“Physicians that treated (him) believe that his condition could be attributed to an incident that occurred at birth, and he may have suffered head trauma as a result of accidental shaken baby syndrome,” Phelps wrote in the affidavit filed at the 9th Circuit Court, Nashua District Division.

During a forensic interview at the Child Advocacy Center, the victim claimed that Holland sexually abused him, and that he had performed sexual acts on Holland as well.

Holland was initially being held on $100,000 cash bail, which has since been reduced to $50,000 cash. He has been charged with 23 counts of aggravated felonious sexual assault and one count of sexual assault.

If convicted, he could face up to 20 years in prison for each of the felony charges, said police.
