Attitash Mountain Resort honors active-duty, veterans and retired military personnel each year with a special weekend of events that includes free skiing and a flag parade.
The 7th annual Military Salute is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday at Attitash in Bartlett and its sister resort Wildcat Mountain in Pinkham Notch. Active-duty military family members are also eligible for discount lift tickets; they are asked to bring a military ID.
"It means quite a lot to us here at Attitash and Wildcat to offer free lift tickets to honor our military and have them enjoy a day outdoors and spend time with their family and friends," said Thomas Prindle, director of marketing.
The military parade is certainly a patriotic sight. Military personnel and volunteer skiers and snowboarders come down the mountain holding aloft United States flags, plus unit flags from the various military branches. Everyone is welcome to join in the parade and proudly wave the American flag as they ski down. The parade starts at 1 p.m. Saturday at the top of Attitash. When all the skiers and their flags are assembled at the base of the mountain, the national anthem will be sung. The local fire department hangs a giant flag from their ladder truck.
On Sunday, the 5th annual Battle of the Branches GS Race is open to all ages for a fun day on the slopes and bragging rights to the winning military division. Racers select which branch they want to represent and award their race points to Army, Navy, Air Force or Coast Guard.
The Attitash Grand Summit Hotel is offering a 20 percent discount on lodging to military personnel for the weekend. Visit www.attitash.com for other lodging offers to military families in the Mountain Washington Valley.
