Rookie goaltender J.F. Berube made 32 saves to backstop the Manchester Monarchs to a 2-1 win over Worcester before 4,507 fans at Verizon Wireless Arena Friday night.
The Monarchs (27-12-6) will host Portland tonight at 7 for "Los Angeles Kings Night." Manchester will wear the Kings' third jersey from the mid-2000s, commonly called the "Burger King" jersey.
Worcester's Matt Tennyson scored a power-play goal at 11:46 of the third period, beating Berube through a screen to cut the Manchester lead to 2-1.
Berube and the Monarchs held on the rest of the way to secure the win. The teams will play again Sunday in Worcester (19-16-4) at 3 p.m.
Brian O'Neill gave the Monarchs a 1-0 lead with the only goal of the first period. Nick Shore and O'Neill were both left alone in front and Shore drew goalie Harri Sateri over before sliding the puck to O'Neill for the bang-in.
Zach O'Brien gave the Monarchs an insurance goal in the third period, beating Sateri blocker-side with a shot from the right circle at 6:20. That goal would prove to be the winning margin.
