Third-period barrage leads Maine past UNH


 

The University of New Hampshire men's hockey team surrendered three third-period goals as the Wildcats let a 2-1 lead slip away in a 4-2 loss at Maine Saturday night.

The loss drops UNH to 14-13-1 overall, 6-6-0 in Hockey East. Maine is now 12-9-3 (6-4-2 Hockey East).

The game was the second of a back-to-back series between the teams. UNH defeated Maine, 3-2, on Friday night in Durham.

Maine's Devin Shore had a goal and three assists for the Black Bears, while Ryan Lomberg had a goal and an assist.

For UNH, Brett Pesce and Nick Sorkin scored goals.UNH's Casey DeSmith made 33 saves on 36 shots. Maine's Martin Ouellette had 23 saves for the Black Bears.Pesce opened the scoring for UNH with a power-play goal at 4:16 of the first period, with Kevin Goumas and Eric Knodel assisting.

Maine's Shore made it 1-1 just over two minutes later, with Lomberg and Ben Hutton picking up assists.

UNH had the lone goal of the second period as Nick Sorkin put the Wildcats back in front as he scored midway through the second period, assisted by Justin Agosta and Matias Cleland.UNH would carry that 2-1 lead into the third period, before Maine's three-goal outburst.Maine evened things up again when Eric Schurhamer converted a Shore assist to make it 2-2 early in the third.

The Black Bears secured their first lead of the game when Lomberg made it 3-2 at 9:08 of the third, assisted by Shore and Ben Hutton.Maine's Brian Morgan, a freshman from Windham, tallied an empty-net goal for the final score of the night.UNH returns to action on Friday night with the first game of a two-game series against Notre Dame at the Whittemore Center.
