PETERBOROUGH — Friends, colleagues and clients of well-known Peterborough architects Rick and Duffy Monahon have started an effort to raise $100,000 to establish a preservation fund in their name.

Rick Monahon, 69, and his wife, Duffy Monahon, 71, died in a car crash a year ago this month.

“There was such an immediate outpouring of just complete admiration for all they had done when they had died, at that point it became obvious that there should be some way to make this legacy continue on,” Dan Scully of Dublin said Wednesday.

Rick had a practice in Peterborough for 40 years and both were known for their passion to preserve and restore historic architecture. Duffy was also known for her efforts to conserve land.

The Rick and Duffy Monahon Fund would provide seed money for community historic preservation projects.

“They had both been absolute champions of historic preservation in the state, and you know most projects just need a little kick-off to get going,” Scully said.

The group of about a dozen friends, colleagues and clients believe that these modest contributions are a way to honor the Monahons, Scully said.

A fellow architect, Scully had an adjacent office with Rick Monahon for 15 years.

The fund is to be managed by the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation as part of the New Hampshire Preservation Alliance and aims to provide a lasting recognition of the Monahons, celebrate their impact on New Hampshire’s people and communities through their architecture and preservation and planning efforts as well as to inspire the Monahons’ strong sense of stewardship in others.

Contributions to the fund may be made to the N.H. Preservation Alliance/Monahon Fund, P.O. Box 268, Concord 03302. More information is available at
