NHIAA Boys' Basketball: Portsmouth ends Pembroke win streak at 37

PEMBROKE — The Portsmouth boys’ basketball team ended Pembroke Academy’s winning streak at 37 games with a 53-49 win Thursday night.

It was also the first loss at home for the Spartans since falling to Coe-Brown of Northwood in a tournament game on March 10, 2012. The 37 straight wins included six Concord Christmas tournament games this year and last.

The Spartans are 9-1 in Division II while the Clippers improved to 7-2.

Portsmouth’s Nick Mackey led all scorers with 19. De’Vonn Wilson-Miles had nine. For Pembroke, Kafani Williams had 16 and Pat Welch added 15.

“You have to hand it to the kids,” said Portsmouth coach Jim Mulvey. “Our kids hung in there and that was big.

“The guys were pumped since Tuesday,” said Mulvey. “But that’s a tribute to Pembroke’s program. Not just us but everyone in the state looks up to them.”

“Portsmouth has the best outside defense in the league,” said Pembroke coach Matt Alosa. “They really do a great job shutting off the baseline.”

“And going 3-for-25 from 3-point range was not a bright spot for us,” said Alosa. “We have to be more aggressive. We can’t settle for outside shots.”

Pembroke entered the fourth up 41-37 but with four minutes left, Portsmouth’s Pat Glynn hit a trey that put the Clippers up for the first time since the first quarter, 43-41.

Pembroke had one last shot down 52-49 with seven seconds left, but Welch lost the ball out of bounds.
