St. John's IceCaps stifle Manchester

There wasn't much for the home fans to cheer about at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Saturday night, when the visiting St. John's IceCaps stifled the Manchester Monarchs' offense for much of the game and earned a 3-1 victory.

Center Kyle MacKinnon, center Adam Lowry and left wing Jason Jaffray scored for St. John's, which received 20 saves from goaltender Michael Hutchinson. The IceCaps (26-16-1-2) extended their winning streak to six games.

Linden Vey scored for Manchester (29-13-2-5), which entered the game with a league-best 65 points. Vey has three goals and two assists in his last four games.

Manchester goalie Jean-Francois Berube made 26 saves.

St. John's has a 6-3 record against Manchester this season. The teams will meet once more during the regular season.

First-period goals by MacKinnon and Lowry handed St. John's a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes, and the lead increased to 3-0 when Jaffray scored a 5-on-3 goal 44 seconds into the second period. It was 3-0 enterng the final period.

Vey got the Monarchs on the scoreboard 1:27 into the third, when he converted the rebound of a Nick Deslauriers shot. It was Vey's ninth goal of the season, and his third against St. John's.

Deslauriers was credited with the only assist on the goal. He has four assists in his last four games.

St. John's defenseman Paul Postma collected three assists in the victory. Right wing Jerome Samson added two assists for the IceCaps.

Manchester, which was scoreless in eight power-play opportunities in Friday's night's 5-1 victory over Binghamton, failed to score in three power-play chances Saturday.
