Mass. woman charged by Merrimack police with filing false sexual assault complaint

MERRIMACK — A Massachusetts woman is accused of falsely claiming she was sexually assaulted.

Gabrielle Caughey, 21, of Mendon, Mass., was arrested Friday for filing a false report to law enforcement and two counts of theft by unauthorized taking.

Merrimack police were originally investigating a complaint that Caughey stole some items from an individual's home on Oct. 28. Investigators determined Caughey pawned the stolen items at a nearby shop, police said.

It was during the investigation into the reported thefts that, according to police, Caughey claimed a man sexually assaulted her. Those allegations turned out to be false, police said.

Caughey is free on $5,000 personal recognizance bail with a Feb. 25 arraignment set in 9th Circuit Court, Merrimack District Division.
