Astros cruise in girls' game


 

DERRY — Pinkerton Academy scored lots of second-chance points to cruise to a 52-31 victory over Manchester Central on Tuesday night.

The Astros improved to 10-1 while Central dropped to 6-6. The loss ended a two-game win streak for the Little Green.

Pinkerton's Kayla Stacy led all scorers with 14 points, including three 3-pointers. Colleen Fortier had six points.

Central was led by Natasha Velez with seven points. Amanda Gaudreault added five.

Pinkerton coach Lani Buskey said Central tried to slow the Astros down. "It's what I would have done" said Buskey. "I told our girls we had to play Pinkerton ball."

The Astros grabbed 17 offensive rebounds, converting many into points. "That's been our emphasis," said Buskey. "Everybody contributes on rebounding."

Central trailed 22-13 entering the third quarter before whittling the lead to five. But the Astros posted another run to lead 41-21 by the end of the quarter.

A big factor in the game was Pinkerton's backcourt pressure, which forced many Central turnovers.

"Pinkerton did a nice job with their pressure," said Central coach Mike Wenners.
