UNH lands three Granite Staters in grid recruits

If anything distinguishes this year's University of New Hampshire football recruiting class from previous UNH classes, it's the number of New Hampshire athletes who received scholarship offers.

Thirteen high school players returned a signed National Letter of Intent to the UNH football office Wednesday, and three of them are New Hampshire residents: Nashua South quarterback Trevor Knight, Plymouth Regional linebacker Jared Kuehl and Hanover running back Shawn Cavallaro.

In addition, Plymouth Regional defensive end Kyle Reisert will join the UNH program as a preferred walk-on. USA Today selected Reisert as New Hampshire's Defensive Player of the Year.

"Playing for my home state is going to be an awesome feeling," Cavallaro said. "The UNH coaches told me they know that the talent here gets overlooked, so when they bring in New Hampshire guys they're usually getting guys with a chip on their shoulder."I just felt like (UNH) was the complete right fit. It was a family atmosphere — that's what I felt."

Cavallaro played quarterback, running back and defensive back at Hanover, but said he was recruited as an all-purpose back who will line up in the backfield and as a receiver.

"Shawn is an outstanding two-way threat," UNH coach Sean McDonnell said. "He is a versatile offensive athletic player who runs and catches the ball very well. On defense, he is an explosive tackler and has great ball skills."

Knight was a three-year starter at quarterback for Nashua South. He passed for 1,791 yards and 19 touchdowns as a senior, when he also rushed for 1,536 yards and 19 TDs.

"Trevor is an outstanding athlete with a very accurate and lively arm," McDonnell said. "His ability to run the ball will help us continue to use the quarterback as a run-pass weapon in our offense."

Kuehl played running back. defensive end and linebacker at Plymouth, but said he expects to play linebacker at UNH. He helped Plymouth win state championships in his junior and senior seasons.

"Jared is a very athletic two-way player who has a huge upside," McDonnell said. "His athleticism and physical toughness will help him greatly at the college level. His all-around play will add depth at the linebacker position and on special teams."

Cavallaro, Knight, Kuehl and Reisert will all play for the West in this year's CHaD New Hampshire East/West All-Star Game, which will be held at St. Anselm College on June 28.

UNH's class includes five other players from New England: WR/DB Rory Donovan (Canton, Mass./Cardinal Spellman); S/RB D'Andre Drummond (Lawrence, Mass./Central Catholic); WR/DB Neil O'Connor (Leominster, Mass./Leominster); WR/DB Keiran Presley (Amherst, Mass./Loomis-Chaffee); and TE/DE Matt Torrey (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire Academy).

UNH also reeled in one player from each of the following states: California, Florida, Washington, Virginia and Pennsylvania.

"We are very excited about the 13 student-athletes who signed (Wednesday)," McDonnell said. "Though it is limited in numbers, the versatility and athleticism of this recruiting class is very impressive. Our staff did a great job in finding two-way players who can help fill voids on both sides of the ball from our graduating senior class."
