DERRY — A group of talented high school musicians from across the Granite State rehearsed Friday at Pinkerton Academy during the annual Jazz All-State Music Festival.

Hosted by Pinkerton, the festival began Thursday and concludes today with a free public concert at 1 p.m. at the school’s Stockbridge Theatre.

Musicians chosen for All-State work during the festival with accomplished professionals in workshops, rehearsal and performances.Lead by Visiting Conductor Dave Rivello, the New Hampshire Jazz All-State Honors Band rehearsed during the morning and early afternoon on Friday. Rivello interrupted the rehearsal at times to give direction and guidance to the band members.

This year’s festival marks the second All-State for Dan Reynolds, a senior at Timberlane Regional High School. Reynolds said he started playing piano in the third grade.

“I’ve always loved music, and jazz has been one of my favorite things,” said Reynolds, who plays vibraphones in the Jazz All-State Honors Band.

Reynolds said he enjoys the free form style of jazz and the flexibility it allows to create his own music.

“You can really express yourself and just do what you want to do,” Reynolds said.He draws inspiration from such jazz luminaries as vibraphonist Milt Jackson and saxophonist John Coltrane.

Any high school musician can audition for All State, said Mike Adams, Pinkerton’s band director. Auditions for the festival are held in October.

There are 108 student musicians participating in this year’s festival, which includes two bands and two choirs, Adams said.Performing at today’s concert will be the New Hampshire Jazz All-State Honors Band, the Jazz All-State Band, the Jazz All State Honors Choir, and the Jazz All-State Choir.
